Man accused of shooting Phoenix mosque with paintballs indicted on 9 counts

PHOENIX — The man accused of shooting paintballs at a Phoenix mosque in early March has been indicted, according to a Wednesday news release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO).

A grand jury indicted 30-year-old Michael Abel Dominguez on nine charges, including six counts of aggravated assault in connection with a March 7 incident at the Islamic Center of North Phoenix near 23rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

The grand jury also indicted him on one count of possessing or using narcotic drugs, one count of possessing or using dangerous drugs and one count of aggravated criminal damage, prosecutors said.

No one was injured when Dominguez allegedly fired a “paint and pellet gun” at people outside the center, MCAO said.

However, rounds struck cars at the mosque, and Dominguez allegedly fired further rounds when victims followed his car to get his license plate number, according to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.

“There is no justification — ever — for violence or hate directed at places of worship,” Mitchell said in the release. “They must remain safe and protected.”
