PHOENIX — Phoenix firefighters rescued a teenage boy found on a ledge of South Mountain on Tuesday evening.
The 14-year-old was high above the Holbert Trail on a high angle free solo climb when a nearby hiker heard the boy screaming for help and holding onto rocks on the ledge, Capt. Scott Douglas with the Phoenix Fire Department said.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 4:30 p.m. and hiked several hundred feet up the mountain before finding the boy. Douglas said the boy was scared but not injured.
An additional crew drove to the top of Telegraph Pass and applied a rope technique called “mirrored three to one” to help the boy. Authorities were then able to lift the boy up the mountain by putting him in a rescue harness.
Paramedics confirmed the boy to be uninjured and stable before he was reunited with his father who also made his way to the scene.
No firefighters were injured while rescuing the boy, authorities said.
