Pet dog perishes in overnight house fire in north Phoenix

PHOENIX – A pet dog was found dead by firefighters who were called to battle an overnight house fire in north Phoenix, authorities said.

Crews responded to the scene in a neighborhood near 32nd Street and Bell Road around 1 a.m. Monday, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

The homeowner escaped as firefighters were arriving. He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but was not hospitalized.

Crews found the dog dead inside the house during their initial search.

Firefighters cut two holes in the roof of the house to provide ventilation while they extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The city’s Community Assistance Program responded to provide support for the homeowner.
