Peoria, SRP partnering to remove, replace trees that pose risk to electric lines

PHOENIX — Peoria and Salt River Project are partnering on a program that will remove trees that pose a risk to electric lines and replace them in other locations across the city.
The Right Tree, Right Place program will result in about 170 trees being gutted in the West Valley city by April, according to a press release.
About 500 trees will be planted in city parks, neighborhoods and schools located near removal areas.
“The addition of 500 trees, thoughtfully placed in our city, is a tremendous addition to Peoria and I am pleased to partner with SRP as we work to elevate our community,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said in the release.

The trees will be replaced in multiples, with the intention of reducing SRP’s long-term vegetation management costs.
Volunteers already have plans to plant the last 19 trees along the Skunk Creek Trailhead during the city’s Earth and Arbor Days celebration in April.
SRP has previously partnered with Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and Glendale on the initiative.
Avondale is also participating in the program.
Over 2,800 trees have been planted in the five years of the campaign.
