PHOENIX – Peoria City Council appointed Denette Dunn to fill its vacant seat on an interim basis during a special meeting Monday night.
Dunn was the unanimous choice to succeed Carlo Leone, who served from 1999 until he resigned April 16 because of ongoing health issues.
“It is such an honor to be appointed to this important position, and I look forward to serving Pine District residents and working together with our entire City Council to help shape Peoria’s future,” Dunn said in a press release.
Dunn, who has served on Peoria’s planning and zoning commission since last year, and Eric Gagomiros applied for the position before the April 26 deadline.

On her application, Dunn listed water conservation, public transportation and street maintenance as the city’s biggest issues.
Each candidate made a three-minute presentation and answered questions from the Council during the meeting. Dunn was sworn in after being selected.
“Welcoming Denette Dunn is only going to enhance the way that we serve our community and I’m pleased to welcome her to Peoria City Council,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said in the release.
On Aug. 27, voters will choose a candidate to fill out the remainder of Leone’s term.
Dunn, Gagomiros and Randal Rains have declared their intention to run in the special election.
