Pedestrian killed after lying down in Phoenix traffic lane, police say

PHOENIX — A 41-year-old man was struck and killed Monday night after lying down in traffic on Thomas Road, Phoenix police said.

Joseph Virgil was lying in a traffic lane at 15th Street just after 10 p.m. when an eastbound vehicle hit him, authorities said.

Officers found Virgil in the road with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The vehicle involved left the scene before officers arrived.

The case remains under investigation.
