Park service asks for input on Grand Canyon telecommunications plan

PHOENIX — The National Park Service is asking the public for their input on a proposed telecommunications plan for Grand Canyon National Park.

The proposal would improve cellular and internet services as well as data network capacity in the park, according to a press release.

According to the park service, the current services are not meeting the needs of the agency, park partners and guests.

The proposed action includes constructing up to five additional telecommunications towers within developed areas, installing small-cell nodes in high-use areas and installing a fiber optic communications cable.

Public comments will be accepted until Aug. 11.

The park service will hold a meeting July 30 at the Shrine of the Ages near the Grand Canyon headquarters 4-6 p.m. to share more information about the proposal.

Following the comment period, the park service will conduct an environmental assessment, consider alternatives and prepare a draft of the plan.
