New Year’s Eve fight leads to 4 people being stabbed at Mesa apartment complex

PHOENIX — A New Year’s Eve dispute at a Mesa apartment complex turned violent, as four people were stabbed and multiple others were involved, according to authorities.

The Mesa Police Department responded around 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday to a report of a “large disturbance” near Gilbert and Broadway roads.

Officers arrived on the scene and found four adults, none of which have been identified, with “cut and stab wounds.” One person had a chest puncture, while the other three had deep cuts with an unknown “edged weapon.”

All four individuals received treatment for their injuries, authorities said.

Ten people were detained as officers collected information and were later released. No arrests have been made as of 3 p.m. Thursday, according to Mesa PD’s John Dreyer.

Early investigation revealed that multiple individuals had been drinking alcohol before a verbal dispute turned into a physical fight.

Mesa PD said others then joined the fight from different sections of the complex, and this is why they detained so many for interviews to clear things up.

Through initial interviews, however, officers have not been able to determine who started the deadly altercation.

There is no ongoing threat to nearby community.
