Baby delivered by emergency surgery after Buckeye shooting dies, police say

A newborn who was delivered through emergency surgery after its mother was shot by a gunman in Buckeye last week died on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Buckeye police arrested 18-year-old Michael Sanchez in connection with the May 14 shooting, which took place near Warner Street and Miller Road. Sanchez is accused of shooting and killing his pregnant 16-year-old girlfriend, Rylee Montgomery, and injuring the baby’s 17-year-old mother and a 22-year-old woman.

Sanchez was taken into custody after a SWAT situation near Dysart Road and MC 85 in Avondale.

In addition, authorities arrested 19-year-old Antonio Enrique Tequida on Sunday for allegedly driving Sanchez to the scene of the shooting and then helping him get away. He was booked on one charge of hindering prosecution.

The 17-year-old mother is recovering from her injuries while the 22-year-old shooting victim remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to police.

Authorities said they are recommending an additional homicide charge be added against Sanchez, who already faces two counts of first-degree murder among other charges.
