Motorcyclist killed after running red light in west Phoenix crash, police say

A 28-year-old motorcyclist died after a collision with a minivan in west Phoenix on Monday night, police said.

Officers and fire personnel responded about 8 p.m. to the intersection of 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, where they found the motorcyclist, identified as Melero Cruz, in extremely critical condition, Phoenix police said.

Cruz was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives with the department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit responded to the scene. Based on witness statements, investigators said Cruz failed to stop for a red light and was struck by a minivan making a left turn.

The minivan driver was evaluated at the scene, showed no signs of impairment and was not taken to a hospital, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
