Pedestrian dies after getting hit by tow truck in midtown Phoenix

A man died after he was hit by a tow truck in midtown Phoenix early Friday morning, authorities said.

Officers and fire personnel responded to a truck-pedestrian collision near Seventh Street and Thomas Road about 3:45 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

They found a patient with life-threatening injuries and rushed him to a hospital in extremely critical condition. The man, was identified later as 48-year-old Alonso Arizona, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Early evidence shows the pedestrian stepped into the curb lane and was moving backward when the truck struck him,” Cmdr. Mercedes Fortune said in a media advisory.

The driver remained at scene and did not show any signs of impairment, police said.

Traffic was restricted in the area in the morning while the scene was under investigation.
