Mesa woman arrested on DUI, drug charges after multivehicle crash

PHOENIX — A Mesa woman was recently arrested in connection with a multivehicle crash as well as drug-related offenses, authorities said.

Natalie Rustin, 34, was identified as the suspect taken into custody for the incident, according to the Mesa Police Department.

Rustin faces multiple charges including aggravated DUI, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia for personal use, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to deliver and possession of dangerous and narcotic drugs for sale.

Why was Rustin arrested for DUI, drug charges in connection to the crash?

On Sunday, officers responded to a three-vehicle at the intersection of Alma School and Baseline roads just after 9 a.m.

According to police, the preliminary investigation and surveillance footage indicated Rustin was driving a gray vehicle, speeding when she rear-ended a stopped vehicle, which then collided with a third vehicle.

Two of the occupants in those cars were transported to the hospital for back and neck pain.

Police said the Rustin initially ran from the scene but returned shortly after. While talking with officers, Rustin allegedly admitted to being the driver and said she ran because her license was suspended.

However, Rustin appeared impaired and was arrested for DUI after performing a sobriety test, according to police.

Mesa police said that Rustin had hidden a bag containing half a pound of illegal drugs and drug-related items behind a nearby business.

Based on evidence, witness accounts and surveillance footage, it was determined that Rustin knowingly attempted to hide the drugs. According to police, the quantities and items were consistent with possession for sale.
