Chandler economic development director started career chasing water in the desert

For Micah Miranda, it all started with water.

“I always wanted to be in water. Growing up here in the desert, if there’s a puddle, I was fascinated with it,” said Miranda, who has served as Chandler’s economic development director for almost 12 years.

Miranda was born in Mesa and grew up camping in the backcountry where he said he learned to appreciate “what a small amount of water can do to a small ecosystem and how it can sustain life.”

Scale up that ecosystem, he said, and that’s the Phoenix metro.

His fascination led him to study regional development at the University of Arizona. He said he originally chose the degree as a stepping stone to becoming a water attorney so he could learn how hydrology, economics, planning and growth all worked together.
