Mesa police fatally shoot man carrying knife at apartment complex

PHOENIX — Mesa police fatally shot a man carrying a knife and acting erratically at an apartment complex Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Officers responded to the complex near Southern Avenue and Dobson Road around 8:15 a.m. after receiving a call about a man walking around while holding a knife and yelling, police said.

They found the man quickly after arriving and shot him after less lethal means were attempted, according to an email from Detective Nik Rasheta.

The suspect died at the scene, and the knife was recovered next to him, Rasheta said.

No officers or bystanders were injured.

The investigation into the incident was ongoing.

No other information was immediately available.

It was the first shooting of 2020 involving the Mesa Police Department and the 14th involving law enforcement in metro Phoenix, according to data tracked by KTAR News 92.3 FM.
