PHOENIX — All aboard! Mesa’s version of the Polar Express is back for two weekends in December as part of the city’s Merry Main Street festivities.

Taking off from the Mesa Drive and Main Street light rail platform on Dec. 10, 11, 17 and 18 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., those who decide to get on the rail car will hear the story of the Polar Express, sing songs, enjoy cookies and maybe get a visit from Santa.

The ride lasts 20 minutes and tickets are not required for the free event. Canned and non-perishable food donations to United Food Bank are encouraged but not required.

Riders can wear their pajamas but are encouraged to dress warmly because it is an outdoor event. A mask is also required.

The event is based off a 1985 children’s book that was later adapted into a movie starring Tom Hanks that tells the story of a magical train carrying children to meet Santa.

It is one of many holiday events taking place as part of the annual celebration in downtown Mesa.

Other activities include The Winter Wonderland Ice Rink, Mesa’s Christmas tree, Mesa’s Menorah, Jack Frost’s Food Truck Forest and Santa’s Merry Makers Marketplace.

Merry Main Street got underway last week and lasts through Jan. 2. A full schedule of events can be found online.

We want to hear from you.
