Mesa officers suffer smoke inhalation while rescuing 2 people from burning home

Multiple Mesa police officers were hospitalized Wednesday night after inhaling smoke while rescuing two people from a burning home, according to authorities.

They safely got a man and a woman out of a home located near Baseline Road and 78th Street just after 9 p.m. following a call about a structure fire.

The blaze had spread to a vehicle, brush and parts of the home when police arrived at the scene. The man was found outside of the home when they got there as well.

Though the man entered during their rescue operation, he was quickly removed while officers got the woman out of the home.

The cause of the fire was not revealed but foul play is not suspected, authorities said after consulting with arson detectives and Mesa firefighters.

No other homes were impacted by the fire.
