Woman hospitalized, 2 in custody after gun sale leads to shooting outside Mesa Bass Pro Shops
Police said a male and a female were in custody after the Thursday afternoon shooting. The injured woman’s condition was unknown.
FILE: Mesa Police Department reported a shooting near the Bass Pro Shop.
An adult woman who was taken to a hospital after a shooting near Bass Pro Shops in Mesa on Thursday afternoon was still receiving care at the hospital Saturday, police said.
Officers responded about 1:20 p.m. Thursday to the Bass Pro Shops parking lot near Dobson Road and Rio Salado Parkway.
Detective Robert Katz, a Mesa police public information officer, told KTAR News 92.3 FM the shooting appeared to stem from a private gun sale that went wrong.
Multiple shots were fired, he said.
A 16-year-old male and the adult woman were in custody in connection with the shooting, police said during a news conference. They were found nearby, but police said they were still determining whether they had tried to flee.
The 16-year-old was booked on several charges, including armed robbery and trafficking stolen property.
The woman was described by police as a suspect in the case, and any charges against her were pending her release from the hospital.
Police say Mesa shooting was an isolated incident
The shooting appeared to be an isolated incident.
Katz said the shooting was confined to the parking lot and did not extend inside Bass Pro Shops.
During the news conference, police urged people buying or selling firearms to use a federally licensed firearms dealer, either directly or as an intermediary, and to choose a safe location for transactions. Police also said their stations have designated areas in their parking lots that can be used for such sales.

Meeting someone to buy a firearm sounds like a really bad idea. Why are they still selling guns when there are already laws against brass knuckles? I know which I'd rather have to face.
But Tuco did leave the shop owner with a bottle of whiskey (and a "closed" sign in his mouth)!
