PHOENIX — Gilbert Fire and Rescue has a new furry employee whose sniffing prowess is set to help the department.

Zeta, a black lab, is the department’s new arson detection dog and will help alert on evidence in suspected arson cases.

She spent six weeks training with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and trains twice a day in preparation for her new role in the East Valley town.

In her free time, Zeta likes to play fetch and hang out with her big sister, Spring.

Zeta is actually taking over arson dog duties from Spring, who retired in October 2018.

Spring spent seven years with the department and worked on hundreds of cases in Arizona, California and New Mexico.

The Phoenix Fire Department brought in its first arson dog in six years in October 2019.

Sonny, a 2 1/2-year-old golden retriever and yellow lab mix, helps the department sniff for accelerants and signs of arson during fire investigations.

We want to hear from you.
