Video released showing Maricopa police officers shooting knife-wielding man

PHOENIX – Authorities on Wednesday released body camera footage showing Maricopa Police Department officers shooting a man who appeared to be threatening his father with knives earlier this year.

The video, which was released by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, shows the response to a call about a man experiencing a mental health crisis at a home near Porter and Bowlin roads the morning of Jan. 29.

The 39-year-old man was holding a knife in each hand and standing next to his father in a hallway when officers entered the residence.

Officers can be heard in the footage telling the suspect to put his hands up and separate from his father.

When the father moves behind a wall, out of view, the suspect moves toward him in what authorities later described as a threatening manner.

That’s when officers discharged lethal and less-lethal weapons, striking the suspect.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The case remains under investigation for possible criminal charges.

In addition, the Pinal Regional Special Investigations Unit is investigating the way officers handled the incident, which is standard procedure for a police shooting.
