Maricopa County conducting building inspections virtually due to virus

PHOENIX — Due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, Maricopa County is conducting some building inspections virtually.

Inspectors will remotely assess electrical service replacements, minor plumbing repairs and septic lines, according to Maricopa County Planning and Development Director Jen Pokorski

“That way, we can keep both the property owner who’s requesting the inspection safe, as well as staff,” she told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Property owners can go to her department’s website to set up a virtual inspection.

“We can see you through the camera,” Pokorski said. “You show us the item that needs to be inspected — we can then see it and approve it remotely.”

Pokorski said building permits are soaring, attributing it to people staying at home and construction crews being deemed essential workers.

“People are still out there building and we’re still out there doing inspections,” Pokorski said.

Eventually, Pokorski hopes to expand virtual inspections beyond seven basic categories.
