Man killed in shooting involving El Mirage police identified

PHOENIX — The man who was killed during a shooting with officers from the El Mirage Police Department on Wednesday evening has been identified.

The Glendale Police Department, the agency investigating the fatal shooting, identified the man as 44-year-old Jeremy Preckel.

Police said that Preckel’s next of kin has been notified.

What led to shooting involving El Mirage police?

The El Mirage Police Department said the shooting occurred near 115th Avenue and Columbine Drive at 5:38 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to Glendale police, Preckel called 911 making claims that he was suicidal and provided his location.

Glendale PD said when police arrived, Preckel started to walk towards officers while holding a rifle. This reportedly caused officers on scene to fire at Preckel, striking him.

Preckel was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured during the shooting.

This was the second fatal shooting involving metro Phoenix police officers on Wednesday.

The first occurred a few hours prior in the southeast Valley, where a man was killed in an incident involving the Queen Creek Police Department.
