Police investigating man’s death after fight escalated into shooting in west Phoenix

A 20-year-old man is dead after being dragged by a car following a fight escalating into a shooting in west Phoenix early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The Phoenix Police Department identified the man who died as Mark Carmel.

Officers were called to a house near 107th Avenue and Broadway Road for reports of gunfire around 12:15 a.m. While responding, they received a call about a person lying unresponsive in a nearby roadway.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Carmel dead on Broadway Road and a vehicle involved in the incident.

Preliminary information indicated a group of people, including Carmel, were fighting, ended up exchanging gunfire and Carmel was subsequently dragged by a car.

Police previously said that two people from the car involved in the incident were detained as part of the investigation. However, they did not say whether it was the same car that dragged Carmel.

The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner is working to determine Carmel’s cause of death.

Broadway Road was closed between 99th and 107th avenues for several hours as police investigated.
