Man arrested for allegedly starting wildfire in Yavapai County

PHOENIX — A man was arrested for allegedly starting a wildfire in Yavapai County on Friday, authorities said.

The man, a Hillside resident, reportedly drove his pickup truck on a bare metal rim for almost three miles, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO).

He was arrested for DUI, reckless burning and endangerment.

Deputies responded to reports of a wildfire quickly spreading off of Bagdad Road, near the communities of Hillside and Yava.

Deputies, based on the initial investigation, believe that the man blew out his tire by crashing into an embankment and then continued to drive towards his home.

The sheriff’s office said that the metal rim grinding against the road and sending off sparks is thought to have started multiple fires along the road.

YCSO advised drivers to pull over immediately if their vehicle is damaged or not safe to operate. It also reminded motorists to check their car for any debris that could create sparks.
