Libraries in metro Phoenix announce closures due to coronavirus concerns

PHOENIX — Libraries across the Valley are closing because of continued coronavirus concerns.

The Maricopa County Library District and Phoenix Public Library said Sunday all of their locations would be closed until further notice.

The libraries said digital resources will still be available for customers during the closures.

That’s the case for other metro Phoenix libraries that have announced closures.

Libraries in Mesa, Gilbert, Surprise and Glendale will also be closed until further notice.

Tempe Public Library said Friday its locations would be closed until at least March 27.

Libraries systems in Scottsdale, Chandler and Peoria haven’t announced changes to their hours but they’ve canceled programs.

The moves come after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday announced a recommendation to cancel or postpone gatherings for more than 50 people for at least the next eight weeks.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey then responded by recommending a statewide suspension of all large public events during that time.
