‘Leopard dog,’ 9 puppies rescued from abandonment available for adoption

PHOENIX – A “leopard dog” and her nine pups are still searching for their forever home after they were abandoned in extreme temperatures and later rescued by the Arizona Humane Society in May.

A rescue team with the Arizona Humane Society found the five-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier named Rainbow Brite tied to a fence on 133-degree pavement with no access to water on May 29.

Upon arriving, AHS’ Field Team of investigators also found Rainbow Brite’s nine three-week-old puppies were also heat distressed. 

Investigators said Rainbow Brite was covered in leopard patterned dye and her body temperature clocked 106 degrees. While Rainbow Brite was panting and suffering from bright red gums, AHS workers provided her water, subcutaneous fluids and covered her in wet towels to cool her off.

After stabilization, Rainbow Brite was taken to AHS’ Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital for treatment. She was determined to be underweight but otherwise healthy, along with her pups.

The 10 dogs were then temporarily fostered, where Rainbow Brite was able to gain 20 pounds.

Rainbow Brite and her nine pups have since been cleared and are now available for adoption at AHS’ South Mountain Campus.
