Gov. Katie Hobbs says she’d like to see more strategy when it comes to Trump’s economy

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs said President Donald Trump needs to come out clearly with a strategy to help fix the economy amidst the uncertainty of Trump’s tariffs and reversals.

Hobbs comments came after Trump initially called for an additional 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum on Tuesday, on top of the 25% tariff already planned to be placed on steel and aluminum products from Canada and all other countries that will begin Wednesday.

Trump later reversed course as the White House announced there would not be double tariffs placed on steel and aluminum products from Canada, in the wake of widespread consumer panic.

“But the bottom line is that businesses want certainty, and consumers want certainty and they need that,” Hobbs told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce and Gaydos on Tuesday. “And when we’re already in an environment where people are struggling with the cost of groceries and housing, that uncertainty is impacting those who can least afford it the most.”

While Hobbs admitted, “there might be a place for tariffs,” which she also referred to as “attacks on Americans,” she called out Trump for his lack of economic strategy.

“I think that the president needs to come out clearly with a strategy so that there will be more certainty in the economic environment, which is really what we all need to stop this yo-yo-ing,” she said.

Hobbs calls for stability for White House amidst nation’s recession fears

Hobbs would not say whether or not she thought the United States would be heading towards a recession, saying she’s not an economist.

On Monday, stocks tumbled as Trump refused to rule out a recession during an interview with Fox News Channel over the weekend.

Hobbs instead called for more planning from Trump which in turn is causing what she called “economic anxiety.”

“People want stability, they need stability, and we are not getting that from the White House right now,” she added.
