Interstate 10 closes in both directions south of Chandler for hours after deadly crash

PHOENIX — Interstate 10 was closed in both directions Wednesday for hours after a deadly midday crash south of Chandler, authorities said.

Two people were killed in the collision, which involved four vehicles, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

What part of Interstate 10 was impacted by deadly crash?

The crash happened around 2 miles south of Riggs Road. Afterward, I-10 was closed between Riggs and Casa Blanca roads, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The closure was announced just before 12:30 p.m. All lanes have reopened in both directions as of 6:15 p.m.

What caused the fatal crash on Interstate 10?

A box truck failed to slow on time and ran into a pickup truck and several other vehicles, DPS said.

The box truck and pickup truck both caught fire, and the drivers of those vehicles were killed.

DPS identified the box truck driver as José Guillermo Castellanos Gonzålez, 53. The pickup driver was identified as Efrain Gutiérrez-Ávila, 62.
