1 man dead, 1 man hospitalized after Phoenix collision involving impaired driver

A man is dead after being struck in a multi-vehicle collision involving an allegedly impaired driver in Phoenix on Saturday evening.

PHOENIX — A man is dead after being struck in a multi-vehicle collision involving an allegedly impaired driver in Phoenix on Saturday evening, authorities said.

The Phoenix Police Department responded to the crash near 27th Avenue and Buckeye Road around 7:30 p.m. and found two drivers suffering from serious injuries upon arrival.

One man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, where he remains.

The other man, identified as 32-year-old Juan Pineda Ventura, was also taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Pineda Ventura died on Sunday. 

The unidentified man was processed for being impaired, authorities said.

What led up to the multi-vehicle collision?

An initial investigation suggests the unidentified man was traveling southbound on 27th Avenue and ran a red light and struck Pineda Ventura while Pineda Ventura had a green light and was heading eastbound on Buckeye Road and entered the intersection at 27th Avenue. 

Police said any charges the unidentified driver faces relating to the impairment are pending toxicology results.

No other information was made available.

The investigation remains ongoing.
