Man allegedly shoots another man in west Phoenix before turning gun on self

PHOENIX — Two men were hospitalized after a man shot another man and himself at an apartment complex in west Phoenix, authorities said.

The Phoenix Police Department responded to a shooting on Nov. 7 around 10:46 a.m. at a complex located near 99th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

Police found a 28-year-old man with a gunshot wound and transported him to a nearby hospital with “serious life-threatening injuries.”

While police were conducting their early investigations, they received a 911 call alerting them to the same cross streets in Tolleson. This call was about 23-year-old David Jones also suffering from a gunshot wound.

Through a joint effort, Phoenix and Tolleson police confirmed the man they responded to in the 911 call was “related to the earlier shooting.”

Jones was taken to a nearby hospital also with life-threatening injuries, but Phoenix police said his injuries came from “a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

After taking over the investigation, detectives learned Jones broke into the man’s residence and pulled out a gun.

Jones proceeded to shoot the man “multiple times” before turning the gun on himself.

Jones survived the self-inflicted gun shot and drove off to near the intersection of 99th Avenue and Van Buren Street before he was found by police and taken to the hospital.

Police said after Jones was released from the hospital, he was booked into jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault.

The 28-year-old victim remains hospitalized.

The investigation remains ongoing.
