2 ICE officers hospitalized after driver allegedly rams car into their vehicle in Avondale

PHOENIX — Two officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement were hospitalized after a car allegedly rammed into their vehicle in a West Valley neighborhood on Thursday, authorities said.

The incident occurred while ICE officers were trying to stop a vehicle in Avondale around 8 a.m., according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“The target’s vehicle failed to stop, and he attempted to return to his residence. The target began ramming his vehicle into the law enforcement officer’s vehicle, weaponizing his vehicle in an attempt to evade arrest,” Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary for public affairs, said in an email.

Two people got out of the car and fled into a nearby residence.

A barricade situation ensued, but it was resolved, according to Kevin Smith of the FBI Phoenix office. ABC15 reported that two men were taken into custody.

The injured ICE officers were taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and were expected to be released on Friday, McLaughlin said.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona will make a charging decision in the case once the investigation is completed.
