PHOENIX – Have a real Christmas tree you need to get rid of? Fortunately, many sites across Phoenix offer free disposal methods.

There are drop-off locations at 14 parks in Phoenix, as well as two Sunbelt Rentals locations, that provide free removal.

Trees should be stripped of all lights and decorations and left unbagged when taken to a designated drop-off location. Only live trees will be accepted, meaning no plastic or artificial trees can be dropped off.

Trees with flocking will also not be accepted because flocking is made of synthetic fibers, which is not compostable.

The trees will either be mulched or hauled away to be composted at the 27th Avenue Compost Facility, the Phoenix Public Works Department said.

City of Phoenix residents can cut their tree up into small enough pieces to fit inside either their black bin or their curbside Green Organics bin.

Residents can also include their tree in a bulk trash pile. Each solid waste customer has an allotment of four bulk trash pick up appointments each year. The appointment allotment calendar begins on Jan 1.

City of Phoenix residents can also take up to two live trees to one of two transfer stations. If residents have more than two trees to dispose of, residents can bring their city services bill and matching photo ID and can use their one free load of up to 1 ton (2,000 pounds).

Think of some other way to celebrate this shopping holiday than cutting down a tree, dragging it into your home and then trying to figure out how to get rid of it.
