Maricopa County provides $7.5M to support people experiencing homelessness in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Maricopa County is allocating another $7.5 million to support people experiencing homelessness in Phoenix, officials announced Wednesday.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the award to the Phoenix Office of Homeless Solutions.

The county has invested more than $100 million to address homelessness across the Valley since 2021.

The point-in-time homelessness count conducted in January 2024 documented a 2% reduction in people experiencing homelessness in Phoenix and its suburbs since the previous year.

“Everyone deserves the security and dignity of a safe and affordable place to live in Maricopa County,” District 5 Supervisor Steve Gallardo said in a press release.

How will county funding address homelessness in Phoenix?

Most of the new funding, $6 million, will go toward a shelter and affordable housing project called Senior Bridge.

Senior Bridge will support people ages 55 or older who earn 0-30% of the area median income. The project will include 40 shelter/transitional housing units with bathrooms and 65 affordable apartments with bathrooms and kitchenettes.

The other $1.5 million will support Central Arizona Shelter Services, which partners with the city to provide beds and services to individuals experiencing homelessness in Phoenix.

“Investing in housing and shelter for those experiencing homelessness, especially our seniors, is a compassionate investment in the stability and quality of life of our community members,” Gallardo said.
