Hiker hospitalized in critical condition after Camelback Mountain rescue

PHOENIX — A man was hospitalized in critical condition after being rescued from Camelback Mountain on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The Phoenix Fire Department said technical rescue crews were dispatched to the Cholla Trailhead around 11 a.m. for reports of the injured hiker.

The man had a ground-level fall and was suffering from heat-related issues, officials said.

Crews hiked to the patient, and, after an evaluation on the trail, they tried to cool him down with the ice immersion bag.

Because the helicopter was not in operation, crews carried the hiker down using a stretcher, officials said.

The hiker was brought to a local hospital in critical condition. All first responders made it down Camelback Mountain safety.

There are no other reported injuries at this time.

Earlier this month, a man died after being rescued in the White Tank Mountains.
