Gov. Hobbs orders flags to be lowered for funerals of DPS helicopter pilot, trooper

PHOENIX – Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff on two days in honor of the interments of the Department of Public Safety trooper and pilot killed in a helicopter crash earlier this month.

Hobbs decreed that flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Friday, Feb. 20, and Monday, Feb. 23.

The Governor’s Office encouraged individuals, businesses and other organizations to join the tribute to Robert B. Skankey and Hunter R. Bennett by lowering their flags.

Skankey, a pilot, and Bennett, a trooper paramedic, died on Feb. 4 while assisting the Flagstaff Police Department with a domestic violence suspect.

“This is a tragic loss, and I know people across the state join me in sending our deepest condolences to these heroes’ families, friends and communities, as well as their colleagues at DPS,” Hobbs said in a statement.

Skankey’s funeral service is set for 11 a.m. on Feb. 20 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kingman.

Bennett’s funeral will take place at 10 a.m. at Mission Church in Glendale.

Both services will be livestreamed on the DPS website.
