Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest national parks ease fire restrictions

PHOENIX — Increased monsoon activity in the Arizona has resulted in a pair of the state’s national parks easing fire restrictions.

The Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest national parks announced this week that Stage 2 restrictions were lifted as the risk of fire has been reduced with monsoonal rains.

A Stage 1 fire restriction remains in effect for the Grand Canyon National Park, officials said. Campfires are permitted but only within a designated fire ring within a maintained campground.

Open fires are not allowed in Petrified Forest National Park with the exception of solar, propane/butane or white gas-fueled stoves and charcoal-type grills in designated picnic areas.

Monsoon activity also allowed the Coconino and Kaibab national forests to lift Stage 2 restrictions this week. Apache-Sitgreaves and Coronado national forests made the move last week.

Stage 2 restrictions remain in place for the Prescott and Tonto national forests.

People are advised to check for fire restrictions or closures before going hiking or camping.
