Grand Canyon National Park North Rim summer season begins May 15

PHOENIX – The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is set to reopen for the 2026 summer season, giving visitors access to one of the park’s quieter and more remote sides starting May 15.

Park officials said the North Rim will open at 6 a.m. that Friday, with all paved roads available to visitors, including Highway 67, Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road.

Those scenic drives lead to some of the North Rim’s most well-known viewpoints, including Point Imperial, Cape Royal, Roosevelt Point, Walhalla Overlook and Angels Window.

There are some restrictions to keep in mind. Vehicles longer than 22 feet will not be allowed on Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads due to tight turns, narrow lanes and limited parking.

Hikers will also regain access to the full North Kaibab Trail beginning May 15, though it will be open to foot traffic only. Stock use is suspended for the season as crews continue maintenance and rehabilitation work.

Park officials said hikers should be prepared for possible temporary closures or delays along the trail as work continues. Post-fire hazards and weather could also impact access at times.

Parking at the North Kaibab Trailhead will be limited and restricted to vehicles under 22 feet. Overflow parking will be available near the site of the former Grand Canyon Lodge. The Bridle Path connecting that area to the trailhead will also be open.

Some backcountry services are returning as well. Cottonwood Campground will reopen May 15, offering an overnight option for hikers traveling along the North Kaibab Trail. Most backcountry areas on the North Rim will be open, but visitors are encouraged to check with the Backcountry Information Center for the latest on permits and closures.

The North Rim Campground is expected to reopen later in the season for tent and RV camping without hookups once conditions allow. Reservations will be posted on Recreation.gov when a date is set.

Visitors hoping to stay overnight on the North Rim inside the park will need to plan ahead. Lodging will not be available in the park during the 2026 season. The nearest services, including fuel, food and water, are located at the North Rim Country Store and at Jacob Lake.

Park officials recommend checking the park’s website for the latest conditions and updates before making the trip.
