Human remains found at Grand Canyon confirmed as last man missing after flash floods

The wife of the last person missing after last month’s flash flooding at Grand Canyon National Park confirmed Thursday that his body was found earlier this week.

“My family has done a lot of waiting over the last three weeks … waiting and hoping Tim (Daddy) would come home, waiting and wondering if the remains found were Tim (Daddy). We no longer have to wait,” Carrie Smith said in a Facebook post about her husband, Timothy Smith.

Smith, a 53-year-old pilot from Wyoming, was washed away by floodwaters along with two friends he’d been camping with on Aug. 29.

The bodies of two Texas men, 46-year-old John Giusti and 42-year-old Brent Rosenkranz, were recovered during the initial search efforts, but Smith remained missing.

On Monday, human remains that were unidentified until Thursday were found along the Colorado River near Crystal Rapids.

Smith, Giusti and Rosenkranz had traveled to the Grand Canyon to hike, camp, fish and explore.

“We know that these three men loved the Lord and were a shining light for Him. The impact their lives had on others is still being shown to our families daily,” Carrie Smith said.

“Thank you for all the prayers over the last couple of weeks. Please do not stop praying for my family, we have lived through an enormous tragedy and will need your prayers for months/years to come.”

About 80 people were rescued after torrential rain caused flash flooding of Bright Angel Canyon, which flows into the Colorado River near Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
