PHOENIX — Cooler temperatures and hunkering down for movie marathons go hand in hand.

The Phoenix area has no shortage of film festivals for those looking for something other than blockbuster hits this fall and winter.

The events offer a range of formats and genres, from children’s animation to short-form horror to documentaries captured using drones.

Some festivals are featuring international films and big-name actors, including Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Shia LaBeouf, while others are focused on local artists.
