PHOENIX — Gov. Katie Hobbs on Wednesday directed the Arizona Department of Public Safety to expand overtime pay for state troopers, setting aside another $1 million to fund up to 14,000 additional patrol hours.

The funding comes from savings generated through operational efficiencies and does not require legislative approval, according to the governor’s office.

The additional hours will enhance highway patrol coverage and support Arrive Alive Arizona, a statewide campaign aimed at improving safety across 6,800 miles of Arizona highways.

“Our Arizona State Troopers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe, often going above and beyond the call of duty,” Hobbs said in a statement. “I’m proud to work with Colonel Glover and the Department of Public Safety to immediately expand trooper overtime pay and deliver critical support to our State Troopers for the remainder of this fiscal year without new general fund spending.”

DPS Director Col. Jeffrey Glover thanked Hobbs for her “continued partnership and support” in providing resources to troopers statewide.

Jeff Hawkins, president of the Arizona State Troopers Association, which represents 1,600 members, praised the decision.

“This much needed coverage will not only increase the safety of our highways, but also the safety of our men and women protecting the state of Arizona,” Hawkins said.
