Arizona DPS trooper hospitalized, suspect arrested after shooting in Phoenix

PHOENIX — An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was hospitalized after a shooting in central Phoenix on Thursday night, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Interstate 17 and Indian School Road while SWAT troopers were serving a high-risk search warrant, according to DPS.

One trooper was hospitalized after the shooting with unspecified injuries. ABC15 reported that two other DPS troopers were treated for injuries at the scene.

The suspect, later identified as 51-year-old Darrelle Lazane Bell, was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, DPS said.

Bell has since been released from the hospital and was booked into jail on Saturday on multiple charges, including 18 counts of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and discharging a firearm in city limits. He was also booked on charges related to the warrant, including weapons misconduct and drug possession, DPS said.

A large law enforcement presence at the scene disrupted traffic entering and exiting I-17 at Indian School Road.

The shooting incident in Phoenix occurred one day after two members of a DPS safety helicopter crew were killed in a crash while responding to assist an active shooter incident in Flagstaff.
