Goodyear seeks artists to beautify metal traffic cabinets

PHOENIX – Traffic cabinets can be something of an eyesore, but a West Valley suburb is trying to change that.

The city of Goodyear is seeking artists to visually enhance the nondescript metal boxes containing the electronics for traffic signals at 10 intersections.

Goodyear had five traffic cabinets turned into public art as part of a pilot program earlier this year.

The program was so well received, the city decided to expand it.

The deadline to submit an application to either paint a box or cover it with a digitally created vinyl wrap is Oct. 22.

The city wants designs to reflect community values and suggested themes such as education, innovation, arts, family, history, transportation, environment and growth.

A committee will judge the submissions based on excellence of past work, proven ability to create the desired artwork and the artists’ plans for community engagement.

The artists selected for the project will be paid $1,800 for a painted box and $1,000 for a vinyl wrap.

Painted cabinets are expected to be completed by March 2020 and vinyl wraps installed by the following month.
