Globe mayor says city is ‘open’ a year after deadly flooding

Globe Mayor Al Gameros said recovery efforts are progressing one year after monsoon flooding killed three people and devastated the city’s historic downtown.

Gameros told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show that the city has completed the first two phases of a mitigation project funded by a $24 million award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

“What we’ve done is build capacity with our waterways that run through our city by digging deeper, digging wider and then stabilizing some of the walls along the three miles that go through our city,” Gameros said.

The September 2025 storms swept 66 vehicles into the wash and heavily damaged businesses on the north side of downtown.

Gameros noted a year later, nearly all have reopened.

“They could have packed up and moved out and shut down,” he said. “And what they’ve done is reinvested a lot of their own money savings, a lot of their retirement, things like that.”

A third phase will stabilize additional walls and reopen damaged roads. Gameros explained the city’s state emergency declaration funds cover 75% of costs, leaving Globe to find a 25% match.

“We’re not a large city that has a lot of money,” he said.
