Gilbert replacing turf with water-efficient landscaping at 5 parks

PHOENIX — The town of Gilbert is converting turf at five of its parks to more water-efficient landscaping thanks to a $3 million state grant.

This measure will save almost 4 million gallons of water each year, according to an announcement from the town.

Officials said they are removing areas that aren’t actively used for play or gatherings — spaces that are mostly decorative but still require significant amounts of water to maintain.

Lawns and sports fields that support games and community events are still available to residents year-round.

The grant supporting the replacement project comes from the Water Conservation Grant Fund.

Here are the parks that will have the new landscaping by June 2026:

• Cactus Yards
• Cosmo Dog Park
• Freestone District Park
• Crossroads District Park
• Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch

There are also rebates available for residents who want to reduce their utility costs and water usage. Information about how to apply can be found online.
