Flash flood warning issued across Maricopa County on Friday evening

PHOENIX — A flash flood warning was issued for Maricopa County on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

The warning will be in effect from 8 p.m. through 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy rain and wind gusts are possible as the storm enters from the far north and west side of the Valley near the Loop-101.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to stay prepared for sudden changes during monsoon season, which begins in June and continues through September.

With the season comes higher humidity, which can possibly lead to thunderstorms, heavy rain, lightning, hail, high winds, extreme heat, flooding and dust storms.

ADOT reminds drivers faced with low- or zero-visibility conditions to pull their vehicle off the road as far right as possible, turn off the lights and set the parking brakes on to reduce the chances of other drivers mistaking the vehicle as the one to follow.

Even if a flooded wash doesn’t look deep, drivers shouldn’t risk crossing it as a few inches of running water pose a serious risk.

In case of an extended highway closure, having extra supplies such as a fully charged cell phone, drinking water and an emergency kit can help residents stay better prepared for sudden weather changes, according to ADOT.
