Flagstaff rolling out holiday fun all December long to lure visitors north

Downtown Flagstaff is preparing for a big month ahead to celebrate the holiday season and entice Phoenicians to make the drive north.

PHOENIX — Downtown Flagstaff is preparing for a big month ahead to celebrate the holiday season and entice Phoenicians to make the drive north.

“We want to make sure that Flagstaff lives up to the title of ‘Arizona’s Winter Wonderland,’” Brooke Eekhoff with the Flagstaff Downtown Business Alliance said.

Families can spend Saturday mornings in December at the Orpheum Theater watching free screenings of holiday movies. The events begin at 10 a.m. with crafts and pictures with Santa Claus, before the movie begins at 11.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Frosty the Snowman” will be shown on Dec. 3, “The Polar Express” will be shown on Dec. 10, and “Elf” will be shown on Dec. 17.

In addition, Breakfast with Santa takes place on Dec. 3 and Dec. 17. Children will have the opportunity to eat a warm breakfast and sing holiday songs with Santa Claus.

These events are limited to 50 participants and are $10 a person. Tickets are available through the Orpheum box office and Rainbow’s End.

Flagstaff’s biggest night downtown takes place Dec. 20. For the first time, San Francisco Street, Aspen Avenue and Leroux Street will be lit up 5-8pm in downtown’s inaugural Luminaria Stroll.

Businesses will also be open to help out with last-minute holiday shopping while local musicians perform the sounds of the seasons.

The Holiday Shopping Passport runs through Dec. 24 at several participating businesses. The initiative, led by Local First Arizona and the FDBA, encourages people to shop locally.

Shoppers can pick up the free passports and be entered to win prizes when they shop at eight of the 21 participating businesses or by spending $250 or more.

Passports are available at the participating businesses or on the FDBA website.
