Excessive heat warning extended as Phoenix ties another daily record

PHOENIX — An excessive heat warning for the metro Phoenix area was extended by a day as Arizona’s capital tied another daily record Monday.

The high temperature reached 114 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport at about 4 p.m., equaling the mark set in 2019, 2009 and 1975.

It was the third time in less than a week that a daily heat record had been at least tied in Phoenix.

It also comes days after July 2020 went into the record books as the hottest month in Phoenix history.

The excessive heat warning for the Valley, which went into effect Wednesday, was extended until 8 p.m. Tuesday. It was originally set to expire 8 p.m. Monday.

During periods of extreme heat, experts advise people to stay hydrated, limit the amount of time outside, try to stay inside air conditioned buildings and remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors.

People should also watch for warning signs of heat-related illnesses, which can include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea.
