Man sentenced for brutally beating ex-girlfriend in Avondale while her daughter was home

PHOENIX – A man who brutally beat his ex-girlfriend in Avondale two years ago while her 11-year-old daughter was home was sentenced last week to nearly nine years in prison, authorities said.

Brandon Ramos Valenzuela, 26, was sentenced Friday to 8.75 years behind bars to be followed by lifetime supervised probation.

The sentence was handed down after he pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated assault and child abuse in August.

Why was man sentenced for beating ex-girlfriend?

Officers responded to the crime scene near Van Buren Street and Dysart Road in October 2023 after the victim’s daughter called for help, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

The girl told police she woke up to find Valenzuela yelling at her mother. The daughter tried to get help, but he covered her face, restricting her breathing, prosecutors said.

Valenzuela eventually let the girl go, and she was able to flee and call police.

The victim was lying in a pool of blood, with cuts to her head and bruises on her face, when police arrived. She was taken to a hospital and treated for a skull fracture and several brain bleeds, prosecutors said.

“This 11-year-old showed incredible courage during what could easily have been a deadly situation,” County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a press release Wednesday. “Even one act of domestic violence is one too many. As prosecutors, we carry the responsibility to stand up for those who can’t, and to make it clear that abuse has no place in our communities — ever.”
