Driver suspected of DUI arrested after allegedly crashing into DPS trooper in Peoria

PHOENIX — A driver who is suspected of being under the influence was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly crashing into a state trooper in Peoria, authorities said.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred around 2:34 a.m. and only involved two vehicles.

The Peoria Police Department said prior to the collision, officers observed an apparently impaired near 83rd Avenue and Washington Street who had fled from police earlier in the night.

The driver allegedly entered southbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway before exiting at Olive Avenue and continuing through the intersection at a high rate of speed.

Police said that the driver hit the DPS trooper’s vehicle as they were going through the intersection and proceeded to roll their vehicle several times.

The driver and passenger of the car were detained then taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The trooper was not injured but was taken to a hospital for precautionary measures, according to authorities.

Traffic detectives are investigating the collision due to a possible DUI, police said.

Authorities added that the off ramp at Olive Avenue remained closed as of around 9 a.m.

The investigation into the Peoria collision is ongoing.
