Driver arrested with BAC more than 5 times the legal limit in West Valley

A driver is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after they crashed last month in the West Valley and were found to have a blood alcohol content (BAC) that was more than five times the legal limit, authorities said.

On June 27, multiple 911 calls were received about a possibly impaired driver on southbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway near Bell Road, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Highway Patrol State Troopers located the car near Camelback Road. However, the motorist refused to stop and proceeded to crash into a wall and sign while trying to merge onto eastbound Interstate 10.

While investigating, troopers saw an open bottle of alcohol in the cup holder and found another bottle of alcohol in the glove compartment. They also noted that the driver’s behavior indicated they were heavily impaired.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical attention. Afterwards, they were discovered to have a .441 BAC.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, people with a BAC over .40 are at risk of going into a coma or dying from respiratory arrest.
