Driver allegedly flees crash that left 1 dead, 2 people injured in west Phoenix

PHOENIX — A man has died, and two people were hospitalized after a west Phoenix crash early Saturday morning where one of the drivers involved allegedly fled, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, firefighters were called to the intersection of 61st Avenue and Indian School Road around 1:45 a.m. for a collision.

When crews and officers with the Phoenix Police Department arrived, they found two cars involved in the crash.

However, one of the drivers fled the area and left behind a male passenger, later identified as 18-year-old Marc Anthony Velazquez Serrano, Phoenix police said.

Velazquez Serrano was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Meanwhile, the man and woman who were in the other car were taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary information suggests that the driver of the vehicle who fled collided with the second car after crossing into oncoming traffic, according to police.

The driver of the second vehicle was evaluated and showed no signs of impairment.

The investigation remains ongoing.
